Decor

Natural materials that age well in salt air and summer humidity.

On the coast, a room has to survive the climate before it can be beautiful. Salt air pits metal, humidity swells wood and the sun bleaches everything in its path. This section is about the materials that last: linen, rattan, travertine, solid wood, natural-fiber rugs and outdoor pieces built for a terrace by the sea. We choose from published evidence rather than testing ourselves, looking at what each piece is made of, how it is finished, and what makers and reputable reviewers report about how it wears over time. We favor fewer, better pieces, and we say so when something will need replacing sooner than its price suggests.
