We choose from published evidence: materials, certifications we verify on the certifier's own records, and reputable reviews. We have not used these products ourselves. This piece contains no affiliate links yet; when it does, they will be disclosed here.
Last checked: October 19, 2026. Published: October 19, 2026 (preview). Updated October 19, 2026: several examples changed to makers with a longer pedigree or a stronger design record, where they meet the same evidence standard.
A well-kept house is rarely the product of one grand purchase. It is the sum of small decisions: the pan that comes out every morning, the sheets you sleep in, the spray you reach for after dinner. Each swap below replaces an everyday item with one whose materials can be named, whose maker says plainly what it is, and which, where a certification exists, holds one. Where a celebrated name could not show us what we needed, we kept the quieter maker that could.
A note on how to read this list. Where we write "the maker states," the claim is the maker's own or appears on a retailer's listing, and we have not confirmed it independently. Where we write "listed in the … database," we looked up the product on the certifier's own records and give the date we checked. Prices are what we found on October 19, 2026, and they move.

1. A coated nonstick pan for carbon steel. We want to be precise here: the FDA says studies show negligible amounts of PFAS can migrate to food from nonstick cookware coatings, and that its concern centres on grease-proofing agents once used on paper packaging, which manufacturers have stopped selling in the U.S. 1. The case for carbon steel is simplicity and longevity. There is no coating to wear away; the slick surface comes from seasoning built up with use 3. Example: Mauviel's M'Steel frying pan, which the maker describes as black carbon steel 2 to 2.5 mm thick, with an iron handle and stainless steel rivets, shipped with a beeswax coat against rust that you wash off with hot water before seasoning 23. Mauviel says every line it compares, M'Steel included, is made in Normandy, where it has made cookware since 1830 4. Around $120 for the 11-inch at Mauviel USA as of October 2026 2. The maker states; not a certified product.
2. Plastic food storage for glass. Glass does not stain, and it settles the question of what a container is made of. On BPA specifically, the FDA's position is that its review has not found information to prompt a revision of its safety assessment for food packaging, and it is currently reviewing a petition on the subject 5. Example: WECK jars, with glass lids, steel clips and natural rubber rings 6. If anyone in the house has a latex allergy, check the ring material before buying. [price?]
3. A plastic cutting board for hard maple. In a 2023 study in Environmental Science & Technology, researchers estimated that chopping on polyethylene and polypropylene boards releases microplastics into food; a preliminary cell test found no adverse effect on cell viability, and the authors wrote that the source requires careful attention 7. Example: John Boos Chop-N-Slice hard maple boards, listed in the NSF database under NSF/ANSI 2, the food equipment standard (checked October 19, 2026) 8. [price?]
4. An unverified filter for one certified to the right standard. A filter's box can claim anything; the NSF listing says what it was actually certified to reduce. Match each claim to the standard: NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants such as lead, NSF/ANSI 42 aesthetic ones such as chlorine taste and odour, and NSF/ANSI 401 what NSF calls emerging compounds and incidental contaminants. Example: Multipure's Aqualuxe, a carbon block system in a stainless steel housing that rests on the cabinet floor below the sink and feeds its own separate faucet 12. NSF's listings, in the category of systems plumbed in to a separate tap, show it certified to reduce: under NSF/ANSI 53, lead, cyst, mercury, MTBE, PFOA, PFOS and VOCs, among other listed claims (the VOC claim covers a defined group of chemicals that includes trihalomethanes) 9; under NSF/ANSI 42, chlorine, chloramine, and taste and odour 10; and under NSF/ANSI 401, listed claims that include bisphenol A and microplastics 11 (all checked October 19, 2026). Each is a certified reduction claim; none of these listings says a contaminant is removed entirely. The claims are for the system with its CBLX cartridge, rated on the NSF listing for 500 gallons 9; the cartridge costs around $180 at Multipure as of October 2026 13. If you are on a private well, have your water tested before choosing any filter. Around $1,250 for the system at Multipure as of October 2026, plus around $45 to $90 for a below-sink kit, depending on the faucet 12. Multipure says it has been in the water treatment business since 1970 12. How it is sold: besides its own site, Multipure sells through independent sellers it calls Advocates, who earn commissions on their own sales and, when eligible, on sales made by Advocates on their team 14. You can buy directly from Multipure at the price above.
5. A plastic-bodied drip machine for a steel stovetop pot. Steel body, base and handle, no electronics and very little to break. Example: Alessi's 9090, designed by Richard Sapper and in production since 1980, which the maker lists in 18/10 stainless steel with a magnetic steel base for induction, a steel handle, and made in Italy 15. On induction, check that your hob will switch on for its base. Around $500 for the 6-cup at Alessi US as of October 2026, and around $335 for the single cup 15. The maker states.
Bath
6. A vinyl shower curtain for organic cotton. A fabric curtain feels like linen rather than a raincoat, and organic cotton can carry a recognised textile certification. Under GOTS, a product labelled "organic" must contain at least 95 percent certified organic fibres 16. Example: Coyuchi's Mediterranean shower curtain; the maker states it is 100 percent organic cotton and GOTS certified 17, and a retailer lists it the same way 18. Around $198 at Coyuchi as of October 2026 17. Not yet confirmed on the GOTS database.
7. Liquid body wash in a plastic bottle for a true savon de Marseille. A bar soap with a short, fully disclosed ingredient list is one of the oldest luxuries in Provence. Many celebrated luxury bars are scented, which is a different pleasure; this swap is about the plain one. Example: Marius Fabre, which states that its family has made soap in Salon-de-Provence for four generations, since 1900, cooked in a cauldron by the traditional Marseille method 19. Its olive oil soap cube lists sodium olivate, sodium cocoate, water, sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and the maker states it has no colouring and no added fragrance 19. Around €4.60 for a 400 g cube at Marius Fabre as of October 2026 19; U.S. price [price?]. The maker states.
8. A body cream with an opaque formula for a certified natural one. NATRUE, run by the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, sets criteria for natural and organic cosmetics, including which ingredients count as natural 20. Example: Dr. Hauschka's Rose Nurturing Body Cream, made by WALA in Germany and listed in NATRUE's certified products database (checked October 19, 2026) 21. Its ingredient list on that record includes beeswax and propolis wax, so it is not vegan, and rose oil and other fragrance components from natural essential oils, so it is not for anyone avoiding fragrance 21. Around $37 for 4.9 fl oz at Dr. Hauschka US as of October 2026 22.
9. A sunscreen you know little about for a mineral one with a Drug Facts label. The FDA has proposed that sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, at up to 25 percent, are generally recognised as safe and effective; for twelve other filters it asked for more data, and it says this is not a conclusion that those filters are unsafe 23. Example: Tatcha's The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50, whose Drug Facts label, as filed with the U.S. National Library of Medicine's DailyMed, lists zinc oxide 10 percent as its only active ingredient 24. Its Drug Facts label makes no water-resistance claim and directs you to reapply at least every two hours, so we list it as a daily face sunscreen only; for the beach, see the water-resistant picks in our mineral sunscreen guide. Check the Drug Facts panel of the bottle you buy, as formulas can change. Around $64 for 1.7 fl oz at Tatcha as of October 2026 25. If you have a skin condition or concern, talk to your doctor or dermatologist.
Bedroom
10. Polyester-blend sheets for organic Belgian linen. Linen is the sheet of Mediterranean summers, and it softens with every wash. Example: Libeco's Heritage line, which the retailer describes as GOTS certified, woven from organic Flemish flax by the family mill in Meulebeke, with more than 160 years of Belgian weaving behind it 26. Around $610 for a full/queen flat sheet at Bloomist as of October 2026 26. Not yet confirmed on the GOTS database.
11. A mattress with undisclosed foams for one certified for low emissions. GREENGUARD Gold is UL's certification for low chemical emissions into indoor air, with limits on hundreds of VOCs 27. Example: the Avocado Green Mattress, listed in UL's SPOT database with GREENGUARD Gold Certification (checked October 19, 2026) 28. The maker states every mattress is GOTS certified organic at the finished-product level 29; not yet confirmed on the GOTS database. Around $1,999 for a queen at Avocado as of October 2026, with sale prices from around $1,699 30.
12. A synthetic-fill duvet for responsibly sourced down. The Responsible Down Standard, run by Textile Exchange, prohibits live-plucking and force-feeding and tracks certified down from farm to finished product 31. Example: Scandia Home's Lucerne down comforter, which the maker describes as 650-fill-power Hungarian white goose down in a 350-thread-count cotton damask shell, made in America using European materials, and RDS certified 32; a retailer lists it the same way 33. In the light weight, around $920 for a twin and around $1,210 for a queen at Scandia Home as of October 2026 32. The maker states; not yet confirmed with Textile Exchange.
13. A fleece throw for lambswool. Wool is warm, breathes, and ages well on the end of a bed. Example: Tekla's lambswool blanket, which the maker lists as 100 percent lambswool in a tight weave with a whipstitched edge, 130 by 180 cm, made in Lithuania 34. Around $460 at Tekla as of October 2026 34. The maker states.
Living
14. A synthetic-fragrance candle for one whose maker discloses its wax, wick and scent. MADE SAFE screens a product's ingredients against its own list of banned and restricted substances 35. Some of the most famous names in scented candles describe their fragrance by its notes rather than its composition; this swap asks for more. Example: Fontana Candle Co., listed in MADE SAFE's certified products index, which describes its candles as made with beeswax, coconut oil, essential oils and wooden wicks (checked October 19, 2026) 36. Around $22 for the 9 oz Pure Unscented jar at Fontana Candle Co. as of October 2026 37.
15. A plug-in air freshener for a filtering air cleaner. A plug-in adds scent to a room; an air cleaner takes particles out of it. The EPA says the most effective steps are to reduce sources of pollution and ventilate with clean outdoor air, that filtration can be an effective supplement, and that you should choose a clean air delivery rate (CADR) suited to the room and avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone 38. Example: IQAir's Atem Earth, which IQAir says is made in Switzerland, with a housing of sustainably sourced beech wood 39. ENERGY STAR record 4016351, for a model named "ATEM E", the only IQAir model on ENERGY STAR's list, gives a CADR of 369 (smoke), 382 (dust) and 423 (pollen) cfm for rooms up to 572 sq ft, ozone of 0 parts per billion, and fan and filter only (checked October 19, 2026) 40. IQAir says the Atem Earth is ENERGY STAR certified, and its page for the Atem Earth links the user manual under the name "Atem E" 39, so we take this to be its record. The California Air Resources Board lists IQAir's Atem E as mechanical, its category for devices that use only physical filtration and do not generate ozone or ions 41. Around $999 at IQAir's US shop as of October 2026 39. For more picks by room size, see our air purifier guide.
16. Conventional solvent paint for a water-based, low-VOC finish. The EPA notes that concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors, up to ten times, and that paints are among the products that release them 42. Example: Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion; the maker states it moved its whole range to a water base in 2010, that all its finishes are made with a low-odour, low-VOC water base, and that its paint is handcrafted in Dorset 43. [price?]
17. A particleboard chair for solid wood. A chair made of named timber can be repaired, refinished and handed down. Example: Carl Hansen & Søn's CH24 Wishbone Chair, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949, in solid soaped oak with a woven paper cord seat, and made in more than 100 steps, most by hand, per the retailer 44. One retailer's product code suggests an FSC-certified version; we have not confirmed that with FSC. [price?]
Laundry and cleaning
18. Disinfecting wipes for everyday wiping for a certified all-purpose cleaner. The CDC says cleaning with soap and water removes most germs from surfaces, that in most situations regular cleaning is enough, and advises disinfecting when someone is sick or at higher risk of getting sick 45. Under EPA's Safer Choice programme, every ingredient is reviewed against human health and environmental criteria 46. Example: Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner, Free & Clear, on the EPA's list of Safer Choice-certified products and marked there as meeting the Safer Choice criteria for fragrance-free products (checked October 19, 2026) 47. [price?]
19. A scented detergent for a fragrance-free certified one. Example: Dirty Labs Free & Clear Bio Laundry Detergent, on the EPA's list of Safer Choice-certified products and marked there as meeting the Safer Choice criteria for fragrance-free products (checked October 19, 2026) 47. The maker states it comes in a recyclable aluminium bottle and is made in the USA from globally sourced ingredients 48. Around $16 for 32 loads (8.6 fl oz) at Dirty Labs as of October 2026 48.
20. Dryer sheets for wool dryer balls. A dryer sheet is used once; a wool ball goes back in the drum. Example: Friendsheep, which states its balls are handmade from 100 percent New Zealand wool and reusable for more than 1,000 loads 49. Around $42 for a set of six at Friendsheep as of October 2026 49. The maker states.
21. A plastic dish brush for beechwood and natural bristle. Example: the Dish Brush Everyday from Iris Hantverk, the Stockholm brush maker, which lists it in beech and horse hair, with a head you can replace with a refill 5051. Horse hair is an animal fibre, worth knowing if you avoid them. Around 70 kr at Iris Hantverk's Swedish shop as of October 2026 50; U.S. price [price?]. The maker states.
Travel
22. Single-use plastic water bottles for a steel bottle you refill. Researchers at Columbia University, publishing in PNAS in 2024, estimated an average of about 240,000 plastic particles per litre in three brands of bottled water they tested, most of them nanoplastics 5253. Example: 24Bottles' Clima, an insulated bottle in 18/8 stainless steel 54, from an Italian design brand founded in Bologna in 2013 55. Around £45 for 850 ml at 24Bottles UK as of October 2026 54; U.S. price [price?]. The maker states.
23. A soft-shell suitcase for anodised aluminium. Bought once, carried for decades. Example: RIMOWA's Original Cabin, which the maker describes as anodised aluminium, designed in Germany and produced in its own factories 56. [price?] The maker states.
24. The airline blanket for a cashmere wrap of your own. Example: Johnstons of Elgin, a heritage mill that has made its cloth in Scotland for more than two centuries 57, and its Gauzy Cashmere Travel Stole, which the maker lists as 100 percent cashmere in a lightweight two-ply knit, made in Scotland 58. Around $800 at Johnstons of Elgin US as of October 2026 58. The maker states.
25. A synthetic eye mask for silk. Example: Slip's pure silk sleep mask, which the maker states is made of its Slipsilk, 100 percent 22-momme mulberry silk, with a pure silk filler and inner lining 5960. Choose the classic mask: Slip's contour masks are filled with polyurethane foam 61. Around $72 at Slip US as of October 2026 59. The maker states.
