Dehumidifiers for Coastal Homes: How to Choose, and the Ones Worth Owning

In a house that breathes sea air for most of the year, drying it is a matter of numbers. Here is how to read them, and seven machines worth a look, led by the systems that disappear into the house.

Dehumidifiers for Coastal Homes: How to Choose, and the Ones Worth Owning

We choose from published evidence: specifications, efficiency ratings, certifications we verify on the certifier's own records, and reputable reviews. We have not used these products ourselves. This piece contains no affiliate links yet; when it does, they will be disclosed here.

Last checked: October 19, 2026. Certification details below were read from ENERGY STAR product records, and prices from the retailer named, on that date. We recheck them when this guide is refreshed.

Updated October 19, 2026: we reworked this guide to lead with whole-home systems and quieter, better-made machines. We removed the GE APEL50LZ, which GE's own page now says is no longer manufactured, and the Midea Cube 20. We also corrected a review attribution: the HouseFresh review we cite tested the 35-pint Midea Cube, not the 50-pint.

A coastal house in South Florida lives with the weather. Warm, wet air arrives off the water through summer and hurricane season and settles into closets, linen cupboards and upholstery. Air conditioning removes some of it. A dehumidifier is for the rest: the shuttered guest suite, the closed-up house in August. In a large house, the most elegant answer is one you never see.

Why indoor humidity matters

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is plain on the point. High indoor humidity can cause mold to grow on many things in a home, including furnishings and clothing, and the agency advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent 12. That range is the target every machine below should be judged against, and a simple hygrometer in the room will tell you whether you are meeting it.

A dehumidifier is a tool for keeping air in that range. It is not a remedy for mold that is already growing. EPA advises that a homeowner can usually handle a patch smaller than about 10 square feet; where there has been significant water damage or mold covers a larger area, it refers readers to its more detailed remediation guidance, and recommends that any contractor you hire has experience cleaning up mold 3. If mold is present, or if anyone in the house has a health concern, talk to a qualified professional and to your doctor.

How to choose

Whole-home or portable

A whole-home (ducted) dehumidifier is part of the house's air-conditioning system. It is not something you carry home and plug in. An HVAC contractor sizes it to the house, mounts it near the air handler or in a mechanical space, connects it to the ductwork, and runs a condensate drain and, for some systems, a wall control. Bob Vila's reviewers describe the Santa Fe Ultra V100 as needing its own dedicated return duct to draw in moist air, with the dried air going out through the system's supply plenum 16. ENERGY STAR advises that whole-home units be sized and installed correctly by a professional 4. Honeywell Home says its whole-home units are sold exclusively through its Professional Partners and need a pro for pricing, installation and warranty 33, and AprilAire points buyers to its nationwide network of AprilAire Healthy Air Professionals 22. Have it sized and installed by a licensed HVAC contractor, including the electrical connection and the condensate drain; this is not a do-it-yourself job. Once fitted, it serves every room on the system and drains on its own, with nothing to empty or move.

That means two costs: the machine and the installation. We give retail prices for the machines where we could see them. Installation depends on the house and is quoted by the contractor; Bob Vila put the total for the Santa Fe Ultra V100, with its control pad and professional installation, at "above $3,000 in most cases" 16.

A portable dries the room it stands in. It is the answer for a condominium, a single guest suite, a wine or media room, or a house in Europe, and the only answer if you rent.

Capacity, and the 2019 change

Capacity is stated in pints of water removed per day, and the number on the box changed meaning a few years ago. Under the Department of Energy's revised test procedure, known as Appendix X1, portable dehumidifiers are tested at 65°F rather than the previous 80°F, to better reflect expected performance in a basement setting 46. Cooler air holds less water, so ENERGY STAR notes that a unit tested under the new procedure will likely report a smaller capacity than a comparable model did under the old one 4. Whole-home units are tested under their own conditions, including a ducted setup, at 73°F 6. Federal efficiency standards that took effect in June 2019 are measured on this basis 4, and the Department of Energy states that makers must still use Appendix X1 to show compliance 5.

The lesson: compare current ratings with current ratings. Makers of whole-home units usually headline a larger figure at 80°F. We give the ENERGY STAR figure first and note the maker's.

Efficiency: ENERGY STAR, Most Efficient and IEF

Efficiency is measured as Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. It includes the power a dehumidifier draws when it has cycled off, which the older Energy Factor did not 4. Higher is better. ENERGY STAR certification requires a minimum IEF that varies with the machine's type and size, under the Version 6.0 requirements that took effect on October 1, 2025 7. A smaller group of certified models also carries the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation, which appears on each product's record in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder 8. We check that record, not the box.

Noise, drainage and placement

Noise is published inconsistently. Makers measure at different distances and fan speeds, and reviewers use their own meters, so we quote each figure with its source and do not rank across them. Drainage matters more. A bucket is emptied by hand. Gravity drainage runs a hose from the unit to a floor drain, and Midea notes the hose must sit lower than the drain point on the machine 43. A built-in pump pushes water up and out, to a sink or through a window, which is often the only practical choice in a condominium or a slab-built house with no floor drain. Whole-home units ideally drain into the same drain the air conditioning uses; where there is no drain nearby, they need a separate condensate pump 16.

Refrigerants are listed where published: R-454B on the Santa Fe Ultra V series records 91213, R32 on the AprilAire records 19, HFC-32 on the Honeywell Home and Midea records 3141. We report them; we do not rank on them.

The picks

Chosen from ENERGY STAR records, makers' published specifications and independent reviews. None was used or tested by us.

A note on ownership: Santa Fe and AprilAire come from the same company. ENERGY STAR lists Research Products Corporation as the partner for both brands 919, and Santa Fe's website carries an AprilAire copyright 10. Four of the seven picks below, including the top three, are from that one company.

Santa Fe Ultra V155

Why it earns a place. For a large house it is the most efficient machine we found. Its IEF of 3.26 L/kWh was the highest of any whole-home dehumidifier on ENERGY STAR's certified list when we checked on October 19, 2026 89. Like the rest of Santa Fe's Ultra V series, it has an 8-inch fresh-air ventilation duct that brings in outdoor air, which Santa Fe says helps meet the ASHRAE 62.2 ventilation requirements 1014.

Capacity and certification. 127.51 pints per day and an IEF of 3.26 L/kWh, ENERGY STAR certified and designated Most Efficient, per the ENERGY STAR record for model 4047300 (checked October 19, 2026) 9. Santa Fe rates it at 155 pints per day at 80°F and 128 pints at 73°F, both at 60 percent relative humidity, for spaces up to 3,500 square feet, with a MERV-13 filter 10.

Sound. Santa Fe publishes no decibel figure for the V series. It says the line's insulated cabinet allows quieter operation 14.

Installation. Ducted, by an HVAC contractor. The unit weighs 112 pounds, per Santa Fe 10.

Price. Around $4,350 at Sylvane as of October 2026, unit only 11; installation is extra.

Where to buy. United States, through HVAC contractors and specialist retailers; ENERGY STAR lists it for the US market 9. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A large single-family house, particularly one built or renovated tight, or one closed up for weeks at a time in summer.

Santa Fe Ultra V100 (and V125)

Why it earns a place. The same ventilating design, sized for a house of moderate size, and the one whole-home machine here with a published hands-on test. In Bob Vila's 2026 hands-on test of whole-house units, the reviewer found the V100 brought indoor humidity down faster than the other dehumidifiers tested, "and it did so very quietly," likening its running volume to a refrigerator's 16.

Capacity and certification. V100: 85.62 pints per day and an IEF of 2.45 L/kWh, ENERGY STAR certified and Most Efficient, per its record (model 4047100, checked October 19, 2026) 12. V125: 102.69 pints per day and 2.63 L/kWh, also Most Efficient (model 4047200) 13. Santa Fe rates the V100 at 100 pints per day at 80°F and 82 at 73°F, for up to 2,300 square feet, and the V125 at 125 and 101 pints, for up to 3,000 square feet 1415. Santa Fe lists an 8-inch fresh-air ventilation duct, a MERV-13 filter, on-board digital controls with an optional wall control, and a six-year warranty 14.

Installation. Ducted, by an HVAC contractor. Bob Vila calls professional installation "highly recommended" 16.

Price. V100 around $2,320; V125 around $3,070; at Sylvane as of October 2026, unit only 1718. Bob Vila put the V100's total with control pad and installation "above $3,000 in most cases" 16.

Where to buy. United States 1213. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A house of up to about 2,300 square feet (V100) or 3,000 (V125), by the maker's sizing, where the owner wants fresh air brought in without bringing in damp.

AprilAire E100 (and E080, E130)

Why it earns a place. A whole-home system that is efficient across three sizes. All three carry ENERGY STAR's Most Efficient designation 192021, and AprilAire says the E100 and E080 are built in the USA 2223.

Capacity and certification. E100: 85 pints per day and an IEF of 2.35 L/kWh, ENERGY STAR certified and Most Efficient (checked October 19, 2026) 19. E080: 65 pints, 2.35 20. E130: 105 pints, 2.35 21. AprilAire rates the E100 at up to 100 pints per day for houses up to 5,500 square feet, and the E080 at up to 80 pints for up to 4,400 square feet 2223. It ships with a washable MERV 8 filter, duct collars and a backdraft damper 22.

Sound. AprilAire publishes no decibel figure on its product page; Sylvane lists a maximum noise level of 55 dB for the E100 26.

Installation. AprilAire points buyers to its network of Healthy Air Professionals 22. Bob Vila, which recommends the castered E100C for large homes on its features (it did not test it), says professional installation is recommended 16.

Price. E100 around $1,870; E080 around $1,490; E130 around $2,440; at Sylvane as of October 2026, unit only, plug-in versions without Wi-Fi 252627.

Also worth knowing. If your contractor is a Carrier or Lennox dealer, ENERGY STAR lists Carrier and Lennox Healthy Climate whole-home units with the same capacity and IEF figures as the E080, E100 and E130 2829. Ask for the ENERGY STAR record of whatever model is quoted.

Where to buy. United States 19. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A single-family house or townhouse with accessible ductwork, where the owner wants humidity managed quietly for the whole house.

Honeywell Home Whole Home Dehumidifier (A65D, A90D, A120D)

Why it earns a place. Honeywell Home, a Resideo brand, offers a ducted line in three sizes. Honeywell lists water leak detection, smart sensors, replaceable components and standard filter sizes 33.

Capacity and certification. A90D (DHM090R4000): 64.17 pints per day, IEF 2.22 L/kWh. A120D (DHM120R4000/U): 94.33 pints, 2.22. A65D (DHM065R4000/U): 52.09 pints, 2.23. All are ENERGY STAR certified but not designated Most Efficient (checked October 19, 2026) 303132. Honeywell names them by their 65, 90 and 120 pints-per-day ratings 3334 and specifies MERV 8 filters 34. If efficiency is your priority, the Santa Fe and AprilAire units above rate higher.

Sound. Honeywell says the unit is "designed to run quietly" but publishes no decibel figure 33.

Installation. Honeywell Home says it is sold exclusively through its Professional Partners and needs a pro for pricing, installation and warranty 33.

Price. A90D around $1,850; A120D around $2,350; at Sylvane as of October 2026, unit only 3536.

Where to buy. United States 30. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A house whose HVAC contractor works with Honeywell Home and Resideo equipment, or an owner who values built-in leak detection.

Santa Fe Compact70

Why it earns a place. A small, high-capacity unit from the maker of the Ultra V series, for the spaces a central system doesn't reach well. It is 12 inches square in section, can hang between floor joists or be ducted, and Santa Fe lists home theaters among its uses 37. Santa Fe says it restarts automatically after a power outage 37, which matters in a season of brief outages.

Capacity and certification. Santa Fe rates it at 70 pints per day at 80°F and 60 percent relative humidity, and 43.7 pints per day with an energy factor of 1.96 L/kWh at 65°F, the temperature of the federal portable test 437. Santa Fe says it meets Department of Energy standards for portable applications 37. We found no current ENERGY STAR record for it on October 19, 2026 8. One retailer describes it as ENERGY STAR certified; check the Product Finder for the model before you rely on that.

Sound. Santa Fe gives an average sound level of 55 dBA 37. A retailer gives a higher range at 6 feet 38.

Filter. A MERV-13 filter and a washable pre-filter 37.

Installation. Hanging it between joists or ducting it is a job for a licensed HVAC contractor, including the electrical and condensate connections.

Price. Around $1,370 at Sylvane as of October 2026 38.

Where to buy. United States. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A wine room, media room, closed mechanical space or pool-house storage room that stays damp when the rest of the house is dry.

MeacoDry Arete Two 20L (for a house in Europe)

Why it earns a place. For a home in Europe, a portable built for quiet. Expert Reviews' Stuart Andrews measured it at 34.2 to 38.7 dBA in normal operation, quieter in his tests than comparably fast rivals, and judged it ready to take over from Meaco's Arete One as Expert Reviews' best all-round dehumidifier 39. Meaco says its team in the UK designed it, with a DC motor, and gives it a five-year warranty 40.

Capacity and certification. ENERGY STAR does not cover it; it is a UK product. Expert Reviews reports Meaco's rating of 20 liters per day at 30°C and 80 percent relative humidity, or 12 liters at 27°C and 60 percent 39. These figures are not comparable with US pint ratings. Meaco sells it as a combined dehumidifier and air purifier 40; we have not assessed its air cleaning and make no claim about it.

Sound. Meaco gives 38, 40 and 50 dB(A) across its fan speeds 40. Expert Reviews notes it can reach 46 dBA in laundry mode, which may be too loud overnight 39.

Price. Around £300 at Meaco UK and around €360 at Meaco's EU store as of October 2026; both listed it as out of stock on October 19, 2026 4046.

Where to buy. United Kingdom, from Meaco 40; elsewhere in Europe, from Meaco's EU store 46. Meaco gives its power supply as 220-240 V, 50 Hz 4046. Meaco does not state the plug type on either product page (checked October 2026). We found no US version.

Who it suits. A flat or house in Europe, or a bedroom wing where silence matters more than capacity.

Midea Cube 50 Pint with Pump: better value

Why it earns a place. This is our one better-value pick: a well-reviewed portable for a condominium, guest room or closed-up apartment at a fraction of the price of the machines above. HouseFresh, which measured the 35-pint Cube with a pump at 54.2 dBA from 3 feet, called it the quietest large dehumidifier in its tests and one of the best home dehumidifiers on the market 44. That review is of the 35-pint sibling, not the 50-pint.

Capacity and certification. 49.67 pints per day and an IEF of 2.01 L/kWh, ENERGY STAR certified; not designated Most Efficient, per the ENERGY STAR record for MAD50PS1QWT-A (checked October 19, 2026) 41. Midea states the built-in pump can drain continuously out of a window or into a sink 42.

Price. Around $265 at Sylvane as of October 2026 45.

Where to buy. United States and Canada 41. Europe: we did not find a European stockist when we checked in October 2026.

Who it suits. A single room or condominium, or a pied-à-terre closed for part of the year, where a sink is within reach of the pump hose.

Skip these if

  • Skip a whole-home unit if you rent, if the air handler and ducts are not accessible, or if you are not prepared to pay for professional sizing and installation 416.
  • Skip the fresh-air connection on a Santa Fe Ultra V unit unless your contractor has assessed the house's ventilation needs; it does a job a standard dehumidifier does not 14.
  • Skip a portable if you cannot empty a bucket daily in the wettest months and have neither a floor drain nor a sink within reach of a pump hose.
  • Skip the Arete Two in the United States; we found no US version.

Keeping them working

Read the owner's manual for your exact model number, which is the only authoritative schedule. From the makers' published material:

  • Filters. Santa Fe specifies MERV-13 filters for the Ultra V series and the Compact70, which also has a washable pre-filter 1437. AprilAire ships the E100 with a washable MERV 8 filter 22. Honeywell Home specifies MERV 8 filters in standard sizes 34. Clean or replace them on the interval your manual gives.
  • Drainage. On gravity drainage, keep the hose below the unit's drain outlet 43. Midea notes that pump-equipped units ship with a separate small hose for the pump 43.
  • Coils and whole-home service. Leave coil cleaning and condensate-line checks on ducted units to the installing contractor. Honeywell Home's manual calls for maintenance on an annual basis: replacing the filter and checking that the drain connection and drain line are clear 47. Santa Fe and AprilAire do not give a service interval on the product, FAQ and maintenance pages we read (checked October 2026); the manual for your model is the place to look.
  • After a storm. A dehumidifier helps dry a house once water is gone, but it does not make wet materials safe. Follow EPA's mold guidance and call a professional for anything beyond small areas 3. If water reached outlets or wiring, have a licensed electrician check them before you plug anything in.
