We choose from published evidence: what hotels publish about themselves, their press releases, guidebooks such as the MICHELIN Guide and Forbes Travel Guide, certifiers' listings, regional tourism boards and travel publications. We have not stayed at, eaten at or visited any of these hotels for this piece, so nothing here is a first-hand account. No hotel hosted us or gave us a media rate, and this piece contains no affiliate links. Seasons, hours and prices change, and most of these hotels close for the winter, so check with each hotel before you plan.
Last checked: October 19, 2026.
The Côte d'Azur and the Amalfi Coast hold some of the most storied hotels in Europe, and most of them keep a season: open in spring, closed by late autumn. Between them they cover nearly every version of the Mediterranean grand hotel, from a white palace on a cape to a monastery on a cliff.
"Clean luxury," for this guide, means hotels that publish specifics: a certification we can name, a garden that feeds the kitchen, a spa that says which products it uses, a figure for water or waste. Where a hotel makes a claim, we name it as theirs. A spa brand is not a certification, and we have not checked the ingredient lists of any product named here. We have not yet given any of these hotels a Clean Score. That needs written answers from each hotel, which we have not yet requested.
On the French Riviera
All three Riviera hotels are reached from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport.
Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel
71 Boulevard du Général de Gaulle, on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula between Nice and Monaco 10.
Of the seven hotels here, this is the only one whose certification we could confirm on the certifier's own records. The hotel says it is certified to Green Key International 1, and the directory of Clef Verte, the French arm of the Green Key label, lists it as a labelled hotel 2; the regional tourism board also lists Clef Verte among its labels 3. We checked the Clef Verte listing on October 19, 2026; it does not say when the label was first awarded. The hotel's sustainability page also says its irrigation and landscaping are designed to optimize water use, and that its spa boutique stocks products from Côte d'Azur makers, all of them cruelty-free 1; that is the hotel's description, and it does not name a cruelty-free certifier. The same page describes a 5,000-square-meter permaculture vegetable garden near the hotel that supplies its restaurants with local, seasonal produce 1.
The spa is about 750 square meters 3, with an indoor pool, saunas and steam rooms, and the hotel says its treatments use Dr Burgener and Biologique Recherche 4. A 2025 Four Seasons release describes a Dr Burgener facial called Les Jardins du Cap, made with Mediterranean plants such as Menton lemons, rose petals and lavender, along with three new cabanas in the spa gardens 5. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel with Three MICHELIN Keys 6, its highest hotel distinction 7, and Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five-Star hotel 8.
- Season. The hotel reopened for 2026 on March 6 9. The regional tourism board lists it as open until November 15, 2026 3. The 2027 reopening date has not been announced.
- Getting there. The hotel says it is 40 minutes by car from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, 18.4 kilometers (11.4 miles) away 10.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc
At the far end of the Cap d'Antibes, Antibes, in a park of nine hectares (about 22 acres) 11.
Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc is the Oetker Collection's grand hotel on the Cap 15. In September 2026 the hospitality trade publication Tageskarte reported that the hotel is a member of WWF France's Club Entreprendre pour la Planète and supports marine-biodiversity work with WWF France 12. We could not open the hotel's own sustainability pages, so we report no environmental figures for it.
The Dior Spa Eden-Roc opened in spring 2023, with three individual treatment rooms and a double, and treatments inspired by four elements of the estate: the rocks, the sea, the garden and the sun 13. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel's 118 rooms with Three MICHELIN Keys 14, and Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five-Star hotel 15.
- Season. The Côte d'Azur France tourism board lists the 2026 season as April 20 to October 18 11, so the hotel has closed for the winter. We could not find its 2027 dates.
- Getting there. Forbes Travel Guide lists Nice Côte d'Azur Airport as about 30 minutes away 15; ask the hotel about transfers.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Château Saint-Martin & Spa
On a hilltop overlooking Vence, inland from Nice 16.
The only one of the three set inland, around an olive grove 1618, and also an Oetker Collection property 20. A 2013 hotel press release announced that the park had become a refuge of the LPO, the French bird-protection league, that year 17; the LPO does not publish a list of individual refuges that we could check, so we could not confirm that the designation still stands. A press release in July 2026 described an end-of-summer lunch in the olive grove on August 30, "The Producer's Grand Table", bringing executive chef Romain Antoine together with "the local producers who accompany him throughout the year" 18.
The MICHELIN Guide lists 46 rooms, a pool, a spa by La Prairie and L'Oliveraie, a summertime restaurant set in the open air of an olive grove, and gives the hotel One MICHELIN Key 16. Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Four-Star hotel 20.
- Season. The Côte d'Azur France tourism board lists the 2026 season as May 1 to October 11 19, so the hotel is now closed for the winter. We could not find its 2027 dates.
- Getting there. Forbes Travel Guide puts Nice Côte d'Azur Airport about 20 minutes away by car 20; ask the hotel about transfers.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
On the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast hotels are reached from Naples International Airport (Capodichino), or by train to Naples or Salerno and then by car or ferry. The coast road is narrow and busy in season; see "Before you go."
Le Sirenuse
Via Cristoforo Colombo 30, Positano, in an 18th-century summer house still run by the family that owned it 21.
Le Sirenuse's sustainability page says the hotel's management "has embarked on a comprehensive sustainability journey to reduce both environmental and social impacts," that it chooses regional products to support suppliers in Campania, and that nearly all of its suppliers of goods and services are local 22. Mr & Mrs Smith reports that the hotel's initiatives include sourcing produce from local suppliers, reducing single-use plastic and gradually switching to renewable electricity 23. We found no certification named.
The spa, designed by the architect Gae Aulenti in teak, white marble and stainless steel 24, has a sauna, a granite steam bath and an ice room, with treatments by Augustinus Bader, Aveda and Margy's Monte Carlo 23. The MICHELIN Guide lists 59 rooms and One MICHELIN Key, and notes that children under six are not accepted 21. Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five-Star hotel 24.
- Season. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel as open seasonally from April to October 21. Check the hotel for exact dates.
- Getting there. According to the MICHELIN Guide, the hotel arranges car service from Naples airport or Napoli Centrale station, about an hour's drive 21.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Hotel Santa Caterina
On a hillside above the sea, just outside the center of Amalfi, family-run for generations 2526.
The MICHELIN Guide describes grounds of terraces, olive groves and lemon orchards, and lists the hotel's 66 rooms with Two MICHELIN Keys 25. Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Four-Star hotel and says the spa's treatments are inspired by the coast's natural citrus scents, among them an Amalfi Gold Lemon Massage 26. The hotel's sustainability policy says it uses "diversified waste management" and energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling, selects local products from Campania daily, and that a high percentage of its suppliers are local 27. It names no certification there, and we could not confirm which product house the spa uses; ask the spa if that matters to you.
- Season. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel as open from mid-March to October 25.
- Getting there. The hotel puts Naples Capodichino airport about 80 kilometers away, and Salerno, the nearest railway station, about 25 kilometers or roughly 55 minutes 28; check the hotel's transfer options and the current ferry timetables.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa
At Conca dei Marini, between Amalfi and Positano, in a monastery built in the late 17th century 29.
A small hotel, with 20 rooms and suites 30, set over four levels of gardens that descend to a cliff-edge infinity pool 29. The spa keeps the monastery's original 17th-century vaulted ceilings and many of its old walls, and both the hotel and a spa trade profile name Santa Maria Novella as its product house 3132. The same profile describes an herbal infusion made with herbs from the garden, offered at check-in, and a spa garden terrace planted with rosemary, lavender, jasmine and rose 32. The hotel says fruit and vegetables from its terraced garden are used throughout the hotel 33, and the MICHELIN Guide says the restaurant, Il Refettorio, balances "sea, land and kitchen garden" and holds one MICHELIN Star 34. The hotel was listed with One MICHELIN Key in Michelin's 2025 Italy selection 35, but its MICHELIN hotel page was not online when we checked on October 19, 2026, so we could not confirm the Key in the September 2026 selection. We found no sustainability page or certification.
- Season. We could not find the hotel's published season dates, and most hotels on this coast close in winter. Check the hotel's dates before you book.
- Getting there. Fly to Naples, then car transfer along the coast; the hotel's shuttle runs to Amalfi until midnight 30.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Borgo Santandrea
Perched about 90 meters above the sea between Amalfi and Positano 37.
Borgo Santandrea says its restoration set out to integrate "the most sustainable practices," naming energy-saving technology, waste management, electric vehicles and plastic reduction, and says its gardens were designed in harmony with the native coastal landscape so that guests can discover the region's native plant species 36. It does not publish figures or a certification on that page. Relais & Châteaux lists a 70-square-meter wellness area with a sauna and an emotional shower, with treatments given outdoors on a panoramic terrace or indoors 37; we could not find which product house the spa uses. In its September 2026 selection the MICHELIN Guide promoted Borgo Santandrea to Three MICHELIN Keys, its highest hotel distinction 738.
- Season. We could not find the hotel's published season dates, and most hotels on this coast close in winter. Check the hotel's dates before you book.
- Getting there. The hotel says Naples International Airport is about 90 minutes from Amalfi, and it can arrange private transfers from the airport and from the Naples and Salerno stations 39.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Before you go
- Seasons. Most of these hotels close for the winter, roughly from late October or November to March or April. As of October 19, 2026, the tourism board's listings show Château Saint-Martin 19 and Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc 11 closed for the season. Check each hotel's 2027 dates before you plan.
- The Amalfi Coast road. The SS163 coast road is narrow and busy in season, and its traffic rules can change from year to year. Check the current rules with ANAS, the national road operator, and with the towns before you drive, or use a hotel transfer or the ferries.
- Spas. Saunas, steam baths, ice rooms and thermal circuits are hot or cold by design. If you are pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor and the spa before you book.
- If you have allergies or sensitivities, contact the hotel directly before you book to ask about bath products, fragrance and food, and talk to your doctor if you have questions about your health.
